WNJ Swamp Sightings: Great Egret in Turtle Pond

By Dana Patterson

The Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), often spotted along the banks of Turtle Pond in the newly-designated State Conservation Area, is a species of Regional Priority in our Garden State.  Often stunning young children when soaring past, its stark white color contrasts the forested background and wings span almost five feet wide.

On the East Coast of the United States, the Great Egret’s breeding range extends from Southern New England down to the coasts of Florida.  Often seen wintering in New Jersey, this bird flies south to Florida and Gulf Coast as well.
