New Jersey Audubon: Birding trips at the Sandy Hook Bird Observatory

Yellow-crowned Night Herons can be found at coastal wetland sites including Sandy Hook, Brigantine NWR, and Bombay Hook.  Note the longer legs, more erect posture, and stout bill that help distinguish the species from similar Black-crowned Night Herons.

Join staff and associate naturalists from Sandy Hook Bird Observatory for exciting birding trips in August.  The first big waves of southbound migrants are arriving, and shorebird numbers are often at their peak.  Read below for details on some of our birding programs this month.

Friday & Saturday August 13-14: two days of birding Bombay Hook NWR and environs in central Delaware; this is one of the best locations in the east to see a variety of sandpipers, plovers, and long-legged waders; plus eagles, terns, Blue Grosbeaks, and more.  Join Pete Bacinski, Scott Barnes, and associate naturalist Linda Mack for one or two days at this premier site.

Saturday August 21: Another crack at Brigantine NWR with Pete Bacinski for shorebirds, terns, and other migrants.
Sunday August 22: Sandy Hook birding with associate naturalist Carole Hughes.  Late August can bring early passerines, plus a shot at interesting terns and shorebirds.

Saturday August 28: More birding at Brigantine NWR for shorebirds, terns, and more with associate naturalists Rob Fanning & Lloyd Shaw.
