City Room: Goose Killings in New Jersey, Sanctioned and Not

City Room rarely ventures to New Jersey, but news that Garden State geese – like Canada geese in New York City, especially those who once lived in Prospect Park, Brooklyn – were having a rough summer drew us there. Last month, 133 Canada geese were killed – corralled, gassed and double-bagged – at Laurel Acres Park in Mount Laurel, a township of 42,000 people in South Jersey. The township council approved the removal after the geese were deemed a nuisance. Residents protested at council meetings and organized a vigil after the birds were killed.
As the debate raged, Jersey geese suffered another blow, one not orchestrated by a municipality or government agency, as far as anyone knows. Early one morning, 18 geese and ducks were found bludgeoned and shot near a Home Depot in Mount Laurel.
