WNJ Exclusive: Hummingbirds in Edison
By David Wheeler, WildNewJersey.tv
Until this summer, hummingbirds had never been seen at the Triple C Ranch in Edison. The ranch sits within the 1,240-acre Dismal Swamp Conservation Area - the state's newest designated nature area - with a diverse array of other birdlife, but no hummingbirds.
That changed when the Terra Nova Garden Club, managed by Michele Lawrence-Botto and Al Botto, installed a hummingbird feeder as part of a wildlife habitat restoration project. The project, achieved through legal settlement funding by Edison Wetlands Association, has replenished the Edison community garden at the Triple C Ranch with green-friendly practices, as well as utilizing bird houses, feeders, and native vegetation.

A mere two days after the hummingbird feeder was installed...our first hummingbird! In the three weeks since, we have had hummingbirds daily. We have observed at least two different individuals, though perhaps far more - we still have much to learn in identifying these lightning-speed individuals. Even through a window, the bright green feathers are impressive, as are the proportionately long and slender beaks. The bird pictured here stuck around to sample most of the holes in the feeder.
In January 2010, PBS aired "Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air" revealing the stunning abilities of hummingbirds as they have never been seen before. Click here to view this video.
