The population of Manchester in Coffee County, TN, is about 10,000 people, but for the past nine years the population nears 100,000 people for four days out of the year. This is because of a music festival called Bonnaroo, which takes place on a 700-acre farm every June. Performers like Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, and Dave Matthews Band take to the many stages as fan fill the fields with revelry. Doesn’t sound too environmentally friendly does it?
I visited Bonnaroo this past month, and was pleasantly surprised to see a vital environmental component. It’s inevitable that 70,000 people flocking to a four day festival will have a somewhat negative impact on the environment, but organizers of the festival are definitely doing their part to make sure that the impact is kept to a minimum.
