Because of the rough winter, it has been a tough year for eagles in New Jersey, wildlife experts say. However, the eagle population in the state is now healthy enough to withstand an occasional setback.
"Up to 25 bald eagle nests failed this year, so it has been a bad year. They nest early, December or January, so they got hit hard by the snowstorms we had and those windy, rainstorms in the early spring," said Larissa Smith, a biologist with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation.
Some pairs failed to lay eggs. Some eggs never hatched. Several chicks were blown out of their nests.
