Middlesex County freeholders are cutting the open-space tax by a cent — per $100 of assessed property value — to save residents $11 million, compensating for a tax hike of about the same amount needed to fund the county budget. The end result is to eliminate an overall tax increase for county taxpayers. While the short-term goal may be well-intentioned, officials are playing a bit of a shell game here. And they're not being honest with the public.
