Naturalists from Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) led an ESL Group on an eco-tour of the Dismal Swamp Conservation Area from their Triple C Ranch on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 in celebration of Earth Week.

The ESL Group learned about the Dismal Swamp and its wildlife such as turtles, beavers, frogs, red foxes, salamanders, wild turkey, and white-tailed deer.  At least a dozen endangered or threatened species can be found in the Dismal Swamp, which recently was awarded with a prestigious State designation of a Dismal Swamp Preservation Commission to establish stronger regional protection.

Shannon explains vernal pools to the group.

Members of the group enjoyed a relaxed nature walk where some of the swamp’s diverse wildlife was spotted, including red-winged black birds, woodpeckers, and a baby eastern-painted turtle that EWA’s Dana Patterson found while on the tour.

The trees are alive!

In reference to her finding, Dana Patterson said, “A wildlife sighting such as this shows how important it is to protect environmentally-sensitive areas such as the Dismal Swamp Conservation Area, especially in areas like Edison where most of the town is developed.”

There's always time for birding!

If you and your family or friends would like to experience the Dismal Swamp, please contact Edison Wetlands Association via phone at 732-321-1300 or e-mailinfo@edisonwetlands.org to find our hours of operation and/or to setup an eco-tour.  EWA is a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment in central New Jersey.
