The Record: Cottontails hit trail in Central Park

There goes Peter Cottontail.

Rabbits used to thrive in Central Park, but these days it might be easier to find the Easter Bunny. The last wild rabbit was spotted four years ago at the north end of the park, and officials still do not know why they have disappeared. "It's a mystery," said Regina Alvarez, director of horticulture for the Central Park Conservancy. "We just don't know what happened to our population of rabbits, but we haven't seen any." The Eastern cottontail thrived in the 1970s and 1980s but began to decline in the 1990s. Explanations range from unknown changes to the environment to feral cats.
