From the Winged Wonders Blog: "One evening in late January, I received a call from a friend who was on a trip in Louisiana. There was nothing unusual about the call until I asked, “How’s it going down there?” His hesitation was slight but spoke volumes, “well . . . I saw it today.” He was referring to the iconic and enigmatic Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Campephilus principalis. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker (IBWO for short) is North America’s largest woodpecker measuring 20 inches in length with a wingspan of 2 1/2 feet. The black and white bird’s namesake feature is its formidable ivory-colored bill. The male has a brilliant red crest while the female’s crest is solid black."
