APP.com: Feds and wildlife officials look to protect loggerhead turtles

Federal fish and wildlife officials announced their intent to put loggerhead turtles on the endangered list, a downgrade from the species current threatened status that will increase pressure to protect turtle nesting beaches and prevent their accidental capture in fishing gear. The joint finding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service was announced this afternoon by NMFS director Eric Schwaab, who said a joint study by the agency recommended recognizing nine distinct regional loggerhead populations worldwide.
