Held for a third consecutive year, the hunt has a long-term goal to reduce the deer population in the reservation to a maximum of 10 or less per square mile, or around 34 head. The figure of 20 deer per square mile is cited by wildlife experts as sustainable in healthy forests, but the forest in South Mountain Reservation is far from healthy.
