The Bird Watcher: Bald eagles make a bold comeback

A bald eagle, over Sussex County.

I was stalking a bittern in a marsh in southern Bergen County when a gigantic bird burst into view over the phragmites. My jaw dropped as I fumbled futilely for my camera.Above me, a raptor with a nearly seven-foot wingspan glided past like a miniature B-52 bomber on cruise control. The charcoal brown body and white head and tail were dead giveaways: An adult bald eagle had just zoomed overhead, leaving me with only an out-of-focus photo and an indelible memory.
