Wild New Jersey Exclusive: December Kayaking the Dismal Swamp (part 1 of 2)

When floodwaters come, most sane people retreat to higher ground.  Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) does the opposite - they go kayaking through the flooded wetlands and forests of the Dismal Swamp.  WildNewJersey.tv's David Wheeler joined EWA's Robert Spiegel and others in paddling through this waterworld just a few days before the rains turned to snows.

The Bound Brook surged past beaver lodges and completely submerged a beaver dam.  Bird life abounded in the trees criss-crossing the newly formed water trails.  Among the wildlife spotted were a Virginia opossum perched on a tree branch just over eye level, a meadow vole swimming across the surface of a flooded wetland, and a northern harrier crossing low over the brook.  Read further for photos, and stay tuned for next week's Part 2 installment.
