Wild New Jersey Exclusive: Recapping the summer of the manatee

Ilya’s Journey

After suffering from severe cold stress, Ilya, the Florida manatee rescued from New York harbor on October 29, should be well enough to be released in the Florida Keys by the middle of December.  He is recovering at the Miami Seaquarium and has an orphaned 18-month-old female manatee named Glade to keep him some company.  He's even been teaching his new friend some tricks, such as picking up lettuce with her flippers.  Since the water in Florida is still warm, doctors have decided to wait a bit to release him so he isn't tempted to head north again.

WildNewJersey.tv correspondant Dana Patterson traveled to the Miami Seaquarium in May and learned about rescued manatees Juliet, Phoenix, and Phyllis. Here, Iyla will recover and swim with them in Celebrity Pool.
