On Sunday, October 11, Rutgers University, Edison Wetlands Association, and NY/NJ Baykeeper sponsored a Fall Float down the Raritan River.  At least 50 participants brought their kayaks and canoes out to Riverside/Bakelite Park in Piscataway to embark on a journey down the quiet waters of the Raritan.

Skimming over crystal clear waters and blue sky overhead, the day was picture perfect, and the limited wind and rapids made for a smooth glide down river.  As hawks, eagles, cormorants, ducks and kingfishers explored overhead and fish fought to swim upriver, the boaters got to experience a perspective of the river not often seen.  Approximately six miles and three hours later, the kayakers pulled up to the Rutgers boat dock to be helped out by the local rescue squad and relaxed riverside while enjoying refreshments.

Lisa Donnan, a local resident, celebrated her birthday floating down the river

"It was a great way to celebrate my wife's birthday," said
kayaker Roger Donnan. "I've been boating the river for 40 years, and it's nice to see there are efforts being made to clean and beautify the banks. We had a great ride."

WildNewJersey.tv correspondents Melanie Worob and Dana Patterson joined the tour.  This event opened everyone's eyes to an unseen section of the Raritan - wildlife, arched bridges, and beautiful fall foliage.
