Wild New Jersey Exclusive: Kayaking the Meadowlands with Hackensack Riverkeeper

A kayaking tour led by Hackensack Riverkeeper's Nick Vos-Wein brought sightings of yellow-crowned night-herons, ruddy duck, osprey, great egrets, muskrats and diamonback terrapins - all in the shadow of the Empire State Building and the New York City skyline.  Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler joined Edison Wetlands Association on a summer tour of the Saw Mill Creek Wildlife Management Area and the Hackensack River.

The dichotomy of wildlife and modern civilization - the twisting, elevated spans of the New Jersey Turnpike, the railroad corridors surging thousands of commuters past - makes for a fascinating kayaking trip.

The bridges and highways serve a spectacular contrast to the abundant wildlife and nature along the Hackensack.
