The First Annual Cricket Crawl will be held this Monday night, September 14th, 2009, at 7:30pm. The event will be part of the "First Annual New York City and Environs Cricket Crawl" to determine the species of katydids in East Brunswick. This event is a collaboration of a number of groups including the American Museum of Natural History Center for Biodiversity and the New York Entomological Society.
The event will include visits to 4 township parks in caravan style, listening for katydids after dark. There are 7 potential species we may hear during our aural expedition. This is a chance for Citizen Scientists to really help the biologists understand the distribution and species composition of katydids in the New York Metropolitan Area (that includes East Brunswick).

The event will begin at the Butterfly Park at 7:30 and then move to Frost Woods, Jamesburg Park and Dallenbach's. All are welcome. If you are interested in participating, please try to take a few minutes and listen to the 7 katydid calls at the links below to help familiarize with the sounds. Then, all you will need to bring along on Monday night are your ears! Some of the katydid calls are high pitched and are best heard by younger Citizen Scientists, so any young ears are also very welcome, especially if they have listened to the calls beforehand. Of course, you can just come along for the fun of being out at night as well!
