WildNewJersey.tv's recent dusk hike brought over 120 local residents to an eventful tour of the Dismal Swamp Conservation Area. Passing showers earlier in the afternoon had left much of "The Diz" underwater, and an overturned boat served as a makeshift bridge for the group to cross the rain-swelled Bethany Brook and reach the forest and wild meadow.
Edison Wetlands Association's Bob Spiegel and Melanie Worob led the tours along with Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler, while Nellie Tsipoura and Kristin Mylecraine of New Jersey Audubon played bird call-backs and explained the unique importance of such a diverse ecosystem amidst a sea of suburban overdevelopment. One of the dusk hikes viewed a Native American sweat lodge, re-created based on ancient Lenape traditions, and a macroinvertebrate study of the Bound Brook. Over 175 species of birds have been sighted here, and at least a dozen threatened or endangered species are found in the Dismal Swamp.
