Wild New Jersey Exclusive: Reptile sanctuary on the Delaware & Raritan Canal

A baby red-bellied turtle climbs across a rut in the canal trail.

Dominic Rizzo of Rizzo's Wildlife led a recent tour through an incredible waterworld of reptiles and other wildlife on the Delaware and Raritan Canal.  Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler and Melanie Worob joined this walk along the canal towpath, spotting many species of turtles, northern water snakes, great blue herons, cormorants, orioles, and a muskrat navigating the canal.

The highlights were a baby red-bellied turtle tiny enough to fit in the palm of your hand, a young cooter turtle, and a water snake swimming across the canal's surface.
