Wild New Jersey Exclusive: Beaver Dams in Primordial Wawayanda

A recent hike by WildNewJersey.tv's David Wheeler through Wawayanda State Park and nearby Bearfort Mountain yielded a number of interesting sightings, from a prehistorically large millipede ruling the detritus of the forest floor to a stunning pileated woodpecker crossing a clearing near a Bearfort waterfall.  Most impressive, however, was the handiwork of the beaver, whose lodges dotted a mountain lake kept intact only by the beaver's dams, which raised the water level nearly two feet from the outflowing creeks.

In addition to the classic Wawayanda wilderness, little-known Bearfort Mountain proved a fascinating ascent to a rugged mountaintop of gnarled pines, lichen-spattered boulders, and prime rattlesnake habitat.
