From sheer cliffs and scenic overlooks to mountain laurel-lined bear trails and rocky caves, Wawayanda State Park offers a side of New Jersey that most people don't get to see.  Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler recently toured Wawayanda, a rugged wilderness on the New York State border.  The Appalachian Trail enters Wawayanda through the most dramatic entrance imaginable - a switchback mountain trail going over and through boulders on the way up a steep towering cliffside.  The dramatic overview at the top makes the hour-plus hike well worth the effort, but this is just a small part of the Wawayanda experience.  On the other side of the park, an expansive lake gives way to dense forest trails through rhododendron and mountain laurel, habitat that should bring out the bears within a few weeks (if not sooner).  Click here for more photos from the excursion, and stay tuned for an upcoming sequel hike during the active bear season.
