Photographer Jim Gilbert visited Barnegat Light State Park, and found a remarkable sighting along the jetty.

"A male Mink [was] very actively hunting the jetty as I walked in at sunset," said Gilbert.  "He showed no interesting in the roosting shorebirds, but eventually came up soaking wet with a fish in mouth."

    David,

Your father and I work together. He mentioned your website to me. I mentioned that the fact that I am on the board of Save Barnegat Bay - http://www.savebarnegatbay.org - there may be topics of interest to you on their website.

I just found a mink in the road, possibly dehydrated or maybe sick. It is currently with animal control and they are trying to help it or determine if it's a lost cause. Are mink sightings rare in NJ?

I ran into your site while surfing around the net. I saw a mink in the salt marsh in Bayville NJ last year.
It was a baby.I had no clue what it was til I saw the photo here.
It came up close to me and stretched out in the grass in the hot sun.
I knew it was not an otter, but this is exactly what it looked like.

I saw a mink near the Boonton Reservoir this evening on the side of the road in the snow... Thought it may have been a fisher, but by comparing the to animals photos, it was definitely a mink.

got photo of retreating animal near a creek yesterday, West Windsor NJ. Low to the ground, long and lean. At first seemed all black but photo suggests very dark brown with long tail somewhat fluffier than a muskat. I think now this is a mink. Exciting!

I saw what I'm pretty sure was a mink on 11/7/2010 in Pluckamin at a pond off Washington Valley road. It was Not a ferret, otter, fisher or marten. It was diving into the pond, climbing a tree and going into another animals burrow; coming out in the pond.

Just saw a small black mink in my backyard along the banks of Shadow Lake, Franklin Lakes. Second time I've seen it this year. I suppose I'll see fewer rabbits and chipmunks next year.

Hubby and I just spotted what I thought was a blackish squirrel, we were wrong! He said it was too long for a squirrel. I live in Water's Edge development in Jefferson Township, NJ (Morris Cty., but closer to passaic and sussex). My section of the development backs up to swampy/marsh area which is adjacent to Moosepac pond. I have a 3000 gallon koi pond (currently almost completely frozen over, pump still active). He came out of the weir area soaking wet. I am hoping he was just drinking. Do you know how big of a fish a small mink would attempt to fish for. Most of my koi are a larger than 18 inches, but I do have one that is 12 inches and a comet that is about 6 inches. I hope I don't find and injured fish when Spring comes along.

Sounds like you live by habitat that's perfect for mink. I think it would definitely go after the koi, but I'm not sure how large of a fish they would eat. Good luck!

I spotted what I believe to be a mink at Vernon Valley lake.It was looking along the shoreline for food and then crossed the lake were I was ice fishing.I stayed as still as I could and it came within 25 yds of me.It did look alot like a dark brown squirrel but longer and did not move about the way a squirrel does.It felt great to observe the animal for almost 5 minutes before it dissapeared.Once in a lifetime....

I thought I saw a mink while fishing from shore in Spruce Run (Clinton NJ) on April 4, 2011. It was swimming for my line in the water before I scared him away. He then came on shore and circled around me - I think he was curious. After looking at pics on-line and viewing previous posts on this site, I can definitely say that it was a mink.

My wife and I watched a large mink diving, fishing and eating just outside his creekside burrow in the Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR yesterday, 1/29/2012. He got very active and protective (but not beligerent) when a great blue heron stopped by to fish. Sorry, didn't have a decent camera with us.
