Wild New Jersey Exclusive: High Point's Call of the Wild

For the thrill of riding a dogsled, you can read a Jack London novel like "Call of the Wild," letting your imagination carry you to the far-off wilderness taiga of Alaska.

But there's a better way to do it much closer to home.  After a freshly fallen snow, journey to the backcountry area of High Point State Park with the New Jersey Sled Dog Club.  Yes, there's dogsledding in New Jersey.

On a crisp January afternoon, Wild New Jersey's David Wheeler joined three teams of dogsledders as they launched their purebred Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and mixed-breed Alaskan Huskies into the snowy powder of High Point.  The stunning wolf-like dogs, with their thick winter coats of silver and white, and their piercing eyes - one dog grey, another translucent blue, another yellow - yelped and bounded in anticipation of their rides.

Within seconds of being hitched to the sled, they took off down the white-packed trails in a timeless scene out of Eskimo dreams.  The howls of the huskies echoed through the frozen forest like a true call of the wild.
