Every year, thousands of birding enthusiasts in North and South America take part in the National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Counts, contributing data to the world's longest running wildlife census. Volunteers count every bird species they find during one day, from sparrows and starlings to falcons and eagles. In central New Jersey, the Great Swamp/Watchung Ridge count will be held on Dec 20, and the Raritan Estuary count on Dec 28. Newcomers and experienced birders are both welcome to join these or any of the other 26 New Jersey counts.
Contact Tom Ostrand (732-549-8118, tostrand@gmail.com) for the Raritan count and Pete Axelrod (908-347-2308, paxel55@hotmail.com) for the Great Swamp count. Information about all Christmas Counts can be found at the Audubon Society website http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc/index.html
